Architecture Writing

Cover to Berlin –
An Architectural History (AD)

As guest editor, my intention was to root architectural objects and projects in their historical context – to thereby challenge an overtly autonomous view of the discipline, giving due deference to the roles of imagination and innovation.

As guest editor I sought to paint a picture that began with the war-destruction of Berlin, and then by way of Interbau ‘57 in the West city (an intended showcase of Democratic Modernism) to Stalinallee in the East city (an intended demonstration of Socialist Realism), the construction of the Wall, on to works such as the Free University of Berlin, before ending with the intentions of the new IBA.

As guest editor, my intention for this publication was to concentrate on the early works coming out of IBA – an initiative at that time with no equivalent elsewhere.

The first of two attempts to bring to the English-language architect and student the fruits of ‘Critical Reconstruction’ as an urban design principle. The varying architectural languages adopted by architects building under the mantle of the New Buildings part of IBA, and that of ‘Gentle Urban Renewal’ adopted by the Old Buildings part of IBA, were demonstrated and analysed.

Three years later, a second report provided readers with maps and reviews of the overall output from IBA – the housing of 30,000 people with commercial space and commensurate social infrastructure.

Returning to the topic of ‘Critical Reconstruction’ more than two decades after IBA, and distant from the fall of the Berlin Wall, the longevity and vibrancy of the methodology, in as far as it had guided what was built as a re-united, capital city, was assessed.

Cover to On the Establishment of New Communities (ARQ)

Following experiences at Allerton Bywater and Osbaldwick an essay asked the question – how are new communities to be conceived and built? With the UK’s and other nations’ current, re-kindled interest in New Towns, this topic is alive.
